From Farmland to City of Homes

The story of South Ogden starts long before it had a name. The area's roots go back to Daniel Burch and his family, who arrived with the Lorenzo Snow company of Utah pioneers in 1848. The land was named Burch Creek in his honor, and for most of the 1800s it remained farmland dotted with dairy operations.

By the 1930s, the community of about 800 people petitioned Weber County commissioners to incorporate. That petition was granted, and on July 6, 1936, the town of South Ogden was officially established. What happened next transformed it almost overnight. South Ogden's proximity to Hill Air Force Base and the Ogden Arsenal triggered a major housing boom in the 1940s, pushing the population past 3,600 by 1946. The largest growth came in the 1950s, when the city expanded by 150 percent. That era gave South Ogden its nickname, the City of Homes, and the label still fits today.

Holy Family Catholic Church

One of the most visually striking buildings in the city is Holy Family Catholic Church, dedicated on May 26, 1981. Inside, the church houses an enormous stained glass window that once resided at the Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity, a Trappist monastery founded in 1947 in Huntsville, Utah. When the Abbey closed in 2017, the window was carefully removed, shipped to California for restoration, and donated to Holy Family. It is a remarkable piece of regional religious art that most people in northern Utah have never seen.

Burch Creek Park

Named after the pioneer who gave the area its original identity, Burch Creek Park opened on April 15, 2021, after a $7 million investment by the city. The park features two playgrounds, a ropes course, a tall tube slide, adult exercise equipment, eight pickleball courts, a water feature, covered picnic tables, and restrooms. For families with kids of any age, it is a solid afternoon out without spending a dime.

South Ogden Nature Park

The South Ogden Nature Park is another favorite among residents. It features a pond popular with waterfowl, walking paths, and a summer splash pad. The natural setting and mountain backdrop give it a peaceful, almost rural feel despite sitting within city limits. It is the kind of place people return to on a weekly basis.

Convicted drivers 21 and older face an 18-month ignition interlock restriction, which prevents a vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected on the driver's breath. Drivers under 21 face a three-year interlock restriction.

A second offense raises the minimum jail time to 240 hours, the minimum fine to $800, and can result in a two-year license suspension. A third DUI within a ten-year period is charged as a felony.
